Check paws after a salted walk

Look between the toes for ice balls and check whether pads are irritated or cracked. Wipe or rinse off de-icer residue with lukewarm water, then dry the paws. Boots or a suitable paw balm may help on repeated salted routes, but fit and your dog's tolerance matter.

If your dog limps, repeatedly lifts a paw, or has painful cracks, ask your veterinarian for advice. VCA's winter paw-care guidance explains the risks of ice and de-icers. Use the checklist before and after walks to decide whether a paw tidy, nail trim or change in walking route would help.
